What happened to OekakiPoteto?

This oekaki was once OekakiPoteto. However it has been heavily modified by Arvee, specifically for use on Neoartists.org.

I can't see/start the applet.

Try downloading the Sun Java Runtime Environment, or JRE at http://java.sun.com/getjava/.

How do I start drawing?

If you have registered and received an e-mail accepting your registration, you can begin drawing by clicking "Draw," then clicking on the applet you would like to use.

I lost my password.

You can recover your password here.

I can't log out.
Can I let someone else draw or comment using my account?

If simply clicking logout didn't work for you, you can try deleting the cookie set by the oekaki. We are not responsible if you mess something up attempting to delete your cookie.

To delete your cookie in Internet Explorer, go to Tools -> Internet Options. Under the General tab, where it says Temporary Internet Files, click the "Settings" button. Click the "View Files" button. Look for a file named "oekaki/" with the internet address "Cookie:[something]@neoartists.org/oekaki/" ...once you find it, delete it.

To delete your cookie in Mozilla, go to Edit -> Preferences. Expand "Privacy & Security," and go to "Cookies." Remove all cookies for the site "neoartists.org." If you are still having problems logging out, contact an administrator for help.

Please do not share accounts or post drawings or comments while logged in as someone else. This is for two reasons. When registration is closed, it is because of bandwidth issues. We cannot afford to use more bandwidth than we are allotted each month. Attempting to override the adminstrators' decision to close registration by sharing your account is not only disrespectful, but affects everyone else at Neoartists, because your actions may force us to shut the site down temporarily to conserve bandwidth. Also, having someone else draw on your account could be seen as claiming someone else's artwork your own, something which is not tolerated here.

My picture didn't post / I wasn't able to comment, and lost my picture.

Your picture may not be lost. Go to Administration -> Recover pics to recover your picture. Your information should still be saved, including the time it took for you to draw it.

Please keep in mind that the recovery function is not foolproof — take screenshots of your work constantly. To take a screenshot, press the Print Screen button on your keyboard, then paste it into a program such as Adobe Photoshop or Jasc Paint Shop Pro. You can then e-mail your screenshot to a moderator.

My picture is marked as unfinished, and when I try to change it to finished, nothing happens!

Try removing any special characters from the title of your drawing (! @ # ’ $ ^ etc.).

Why was my drawing deleted?

No drawing is ever deleted based solely on skill level.

Put effort into your drawings. This oekaki is for artwork, not scribbles. Drawings that lack thought, effort or inspiration risk being deleted. This includes the far too common floating head, solitary eyeball, "artist's block," and quick doodle asking a question or asking for requests. Avatars and LJ icons are not expempt from this — if they lack effort they will be deleted just like any other picture. If you create an avatar or any other picture that you know doesn't belong on the oekaki board, please delete it yourself.

Realize that someone else's hard work was pushed off the board to make room for those scribbles.

If you feel the need to apologize for posting something... do everyone a favor and delete it instead. You're probably right in thinking it shouldn't be there.

While we have no set time requirement for each drawing, not many of us can churn out a completed piece of artwork in only a few minutes. Please, spend time on the drawings you post to the oekaki. And remember, just because you draw it doesn't mean you have to post it. Sometimes it's better to close the window and try something else.

Any subject matter is allowed. No drawing will be deleted simply based on their content. However, drawings may be deleted if they lack content.

If you have nothing to say about your drawing, and neglect to comment... why would anyone else have anything to say about it? Don't post it.

Do not flood the board. If you have more than a two or three drawings on a single page, you are probably flooding. Give everyone else a chance to have their drawings seen.

If you are using a reference picture for your work, cite it. Whether it be a photograph you are using for anatomy, a drawing you are using to get details on a particular character just right, or anything else, it's only fair to give credit where credit is due. You can link to the reference picture or give the name of the artist and if possible the title of the work you are referring to.

All drawings are automatically deleted by the system eventually, unless they are archived. Others are deleted at a moderator's discretion. Please do not complain on the board about your drawing being deleted. If your drawing was deleted for a reason not mentioned here, or if you have specific questions regarding the action, send a private message to the moderator that deleted it or an administrator.

What are the rules regarding unfinished drawings?

Please remember that you do not necessarily need to post an unfinished drawing whenever you are not able to complete it right away. You can always leave the applet running until you are able to complete it.

Unfinished drawings are fine, but please be sure the top comment mentions that drawing is incomplete, and when you intend to finish it. Please do not check the "Finished?" box until you are completely finished. Once you have finished the drawing, edit the top comment to let everyone know it is completed, and check the "Finished?" box. Sometimes several pages of drawings are posted each day, and this makes things a little easier on the moderators.

If your drawing is unfinished, and you are not continuing it immediately, please be sure to have some visible subject matter. If you spend five minutes on a drawing, then leave it unfinished for weeks, you risk having the drawing deleted.

If you have an unfinished drawing on the board, please do not begin a new one unless you intend to finish it immediately. If you have no intention of completing a drawing that is already posted to the board, please delete it.

Please do not post simple textures, and write "I'm not done yet... what should I draw?" It will be deleted if it remains incomplete for long.

When you continue a drawing, please use the same slot unless the previous drawing is several pages back. If you do decide to bump up your drawing, be sure it is completed, and remember to delete the original.

Please do not write "DO NOT DELETE THIS!!!" on your drawings or in your comments. This will not magically place you above the rules that everyone else respectfully follows. We might just delete it out of spite. ;D

Why was my comment deleted?

Be respectful of your fellow artists. Do not insult artwork. Please keep your comments positive. If you are giving constructive criticism, please consider the following:

  • Was the picture done with or without animation? If it was done without animation, it is often extremely difficult to re-touch.
  • Is the artist realistically able to follow your suggestions, or would it be entirely too demanding to make the change?
  • Is what you're critiquing an intentional stylistic choice, or something done unintentionally that could be improved?
  • Will your advice be helpful to the artist in the future?
  • While pointing out that something doesn't look right may be helpful, it is infinitely more helpful if you tell the artist how he or she can make it look right.
  • Are you sure your advice is correct? If you don't know what you're talking about, you shouldn't be criticizing someone else for lacking the same knowledge.
Do not say "don't steal this drawing." It is a given that it is your work, and you have the copyright to it. We are all artists here, and assuming that one of us wants to take credit for your drawing is just plain rude. Placing your signature or a copyright notice on the drawing itself should be more than sufficient.

If you are not a new user, please post your introductions to new users on the forums, or preferably, in private messages, rather than in comments on the oekaki. If you are a new user, we would love to have you introduce yourself. Also, welcoming new users is always encouraged, we are simply trying to avoid people introducing themselves the same way again and again, as it becomes very tiring to the other regular users.

No advertising, ever. Do not post on the oekaki for the sole reason of plugging or linking an external URL, or a commission service. If you want to share your website with others, there is a place for that in your profile.

Do not beg for comments, or post a new drawing just for the sake of asking people to comment on another drawing a few pages back. Your work will receive plenty of comments if you work hard enough at it.

Common netiquette is expected. Please refrain from using chatspeak (i.e. gr8, ur, plz, sry, ne1). It makes your comments difficult to read, and it makes you appear unintelligent.

You are expected to behave maturely here, whining is not tolerated. This includes, "My drawings are horrible, why do I even bother!?" "I'm eternally depressed, nobody will ever understand me!" "Why was my drawing deleted?! I spent an entire TWELVE minutes of my life on it!" and everybody's favorite, "I don't get enough attention here so I'm leaving this oekaki forever!" Get a LiveJournal if you want someplace to whine. You can find more details on appropriate behavior here.

If someone is being rude, disrespectful, or just plain stupid, don't react. Ignore them. Don't reply to them, don't refer to them in other posts. Just pretend they are invisible. A moderator will attend to the situation as soon as possible.

Only moderators should be telling people they aren't following these guidelines, reminding them of the rules, etc. It makes it harder for us to enforce the rules, and if you are wrong, it will only cause confusion regarding the rules; it is best that you notify a moderator instead of trying to correct the offender. It is each person's individual responsibility to be aware of the guidelines, and we will deal with those who choose to not follow them as quickly as possible.

How can I send a message to someone?

Click on the user's name to open up their profile, and click on "send a message." You must be logged in to your account to send messages.

What is an archive? Why are certain drawings archived?

When the picture limit is reached, the oekaki will recycle through the picture count. Archiving a picture will prevent it from being overwritten by this process. Only moderators can archive pictures.

Drawings are archived for several reasons. They have a significant meaning, such as Suisei's Wocky, which was the first drawing ever on this oekaki. Some are archived for the impact they have on the viewer, like Kittie's In Loving Memory. Every once in a while, there will be a drawing that simply amazes everyone, and it would be a travesty to have it bumped off the board, like Blonde's dolphin. Most often, however, a drawing is archived because the artist has shown remarkable personal progress in that piece, like Tiger's Rest In Peace.

You may, of course, politely ask that someone else's art be archived, but please do not ask us to archive your own artwork.

Are contests allowed?

We love contests! :D Only one contest on the oekaki board at a time, though. That way everyone can participate and no one's contest gets overlooked for someone else's.

If you would like to run a contest, submit your idea via the contest submission form.

Submitting your idea does not start your contest. Your contest is not active until it is made active by a moderator, and you are notified via a private message. Once we notify you, you may post an announcement on the Oekaki. Try to draw something worthwhile for the announcement drawing, too. ;)

Contests posted to the oekaki without prior consent from a moderator will be deleted. Contest reminders are not necessary, please do not post them.

If you won a contest but the person holding the contest did not give you the reward specified, please notify an administrator.

Why can't I immediately see my updated picture when I re-touch it?
Why is someone else's picture showing instead of mine?

Your browser cache is retaining the former picture; to see the updated picture, click on the picture, refresh the page, and then press your back button.

I'm using the Animated NoteBBS / OekakiBBS. How do I start animating?

Just draw as you normally would. The applet will automatically track your movements and store it in a file.

Can I make a tutorial using the animation feature?

Yes, we love tutorials! But please be sure that the final outcome is something that otherwise wouldn't be deleted.

How do I edit and delete my own drawings and comments?

To edit or delete a comment, go to Administration -> Edit Comments.
To edit your drawing, click the word "Re-Touch" above the drawing.
To delete your drawing, go to Administration -> Edit Pics.
To edit the first comment you left when posting your drawing, go to Administration -> Edit Pics.

Information on Collaborations and Claiming

In order to do a collaborative picture, you must first find a collaboration partner. You cannot do a collaboration if you haven't already found a partner. You may want to decide ahead of time what each person will do within the picture. Often one person does lineart and the other will color, however you can go back and forth as often as you like. The first artist can start drawing normally, and when done, send the picture as usual. When you reach the comment page, you may select the collaboration partner from the dropdown menu that says "Co-owned by." When you are finished commenting, the drawing will appear on the oekaki board. The collaboration partner will see a [Finish] option, which they will use to continue working on the picture. Please note that you will not be able to remove a collaboration partner once you have pressed submit.

Some tips for a successful collaboration:
  • Use the eraser as little as possible -- try using undo instead.
  • Avoid using the circle and rectangle tools.
  • Avoid using flip, copy, and rotate.
Claiming is similar to collaborating. The only difference is that, instead of predetermining who will complete the picture, it is left for anyone to finish. This is done on a first come, first serve basis. Please do not post artist criteria in your comments. Do not make your picture claimable if you are not willing to allow anyone to finish it.

Do not post something as claimable simply because you have lost interest and do not want to finish it yourself. The claimable function is intended to allow a collaborative effort between two artists, not a lack of effort for one.

Do not claim a drawing if you do not intend to work on it reasonably soon. We do not ask that you work on it immediately, but please begin working on it before you work on any other drawing, and before you leave the site. Please do not claim and leave, or claim and comment saying you'll work on it later. This is unfair to the first artist and anyone else that could have claimed the drawing.
